MISS MARPLE

THE CASE OF THE TOP TV DETECTIVES:
MISS MARPLE:
Miss Marple is a charming, charismatic, pleasant old lady. Many Agatha Christie fans actually prefer her as a detective rather than Poirot. She is a tall women in her late 60’s and she is usually seen in old fashion, formal outfit. People usually under estimate her as a detective because she looks more like an old maid than a police detective. Her appearance is plain and simple and she enjoys sewing and gossiping to various people in the town and that’s what makes her such a key character. She breaks the stereotype of a typical detective and this is probably why she comes across much more likeable and relatable in the show. She always expects the worse of people and things and with some frightening accuracy is usually proven right. She is also nosy and curious to get involved where ever she can. Some of the audience can compare her to a fussy, interfering grandmother figure. But with all of this, she is very wise and judicious.
What makes her a good detective is that she is snooty in her everyday life but when it comes to finding out about crimes and doing her job her ability to blend into the background is flawless. This is what makes her character so effective and you don’t expect half of the things she does. She is never surprised by anything and she will talk to every new person in the town. She also fearless and this makes her a great character to watch as the audience can look up to her and realise she is much more powerful and capable of doing thinks than she looks. Miss Marple establishes order, structure and morality in society. The audience enjoys always seeing her doing very old lady like things such as sewing, cooking, gossiping with others in the village and so when we see her change so drastically from a kind humble old lady to a bold, heroic and intelligent detective and this is what makes her so effective and enjoyable to watch because the audience look out for that change in her manner.
