JOHNNY ENGLISH CHARACTERIZATION

Media Johnny English characterization

The character Johnny English is an anti-hero. He is the main hero character of the film and he does do normal hero and superhero things such as stunts and chases and typically saving the woman. But he is a supposed to be taken as a joke because of all the heroic acts he does they almost always fail or he makes a fool of himself. This is funny for the audience as we expect him to mess up and he is a stereotypical anti- hero. We enjoy watching him do things like bang his head on a tunnel as the woman says ‘be careful’ which he goes on to say in response ‘ I am always careful’ which is ironic because he then hits his head and this makes the audience laugh. The way he is dressed is not a typical stunt, fighting combat type uniform. Instead he is wearing a white suit which is obviously going to get ruined and he is also not the typical Muscly clean cut handsome sort of man like James Bond or tom cruise. He takes himself very seriously and expects people and women around him to do the same. He doesn’t have loads of hi-tech equipment or fancy gadgets with him, instead he just has a simple gun. He is not advanced in the action packed life risking type of job. He is daring and brave and he is always trying to impress other people. In another clip I watched he is on his way out on an important mission with his lady friend and he gets his jacket caught in the door and he says ‘hold on, I’ll just be a minute’ this emphases his lazy, clumsy personality and makes us audience enjoy the film even more because we can sometimes relate to Johnny.

  1. Evidence of detailed analysis, heroic qualities listed, supported by evidence. Reasoned argument seeing both sides of 'heroic' and 'anti-heroic'.
